The Salem Light Infantry (Salem Zoaves), pictured above, was just
one group of reenactors that participated in the First Annual
National Guard Heritage Muster on April 19, 2003. The event will be
held annually to celebrate the founding of the United States National
Guard which traces its roots to Salem, Massachusetts in 1637 when the
East Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia first mustered on Salem
Common. Over 1,000 active National Guard troops and veterans from
Salem and the surrounding area participated. Several thousand
spectators enjoyed the festivities.
Bonnie Hurd Smith was hired by the Peabody Essex Museum to plan and
execute the first event. Subsequently, she has assisted the
Massachusetts National Guard to continue the tradition of the
event.
The event
included:
Memorial Service at Armory Park including speeches by
Mass. Army National Guard, Peabody Essex Museum, and Second Corps
Cadets dignitaries, lowering of flags to half mast, roll call of
those killed answering the Lexington Alarm, wreath laying, rifle
salute, taps, singing of "God Bless America," troops march to Salem
Common
Muster on Salem Common including formation of
troops, howitzer salute, review of troops by reviewing party, honors
to the nation, speeches by the city and state dignitaries and by the
Adjutant General of Massachusetts, a final pass in review of the
troops
Tasks:
assisted with logistical details, working with the Peabody
Essex Museum, City of Salem, and Salem Parks & Recreation
coordinated civilian speakers
designed flier and program
worked with local, state, and national media
Following the event, Bonnie Hurd Smith worked with Salem Now, a
program of Salem's cable station, to produce a video that will help
raise money for the National Lancers Guard Anniversary Fund that
supports the National Guard Heritage Muster.
