The Salem News, April 21, 2003

The Salem Light Infantry (Salem Zoaves), pictured above, was just one group of reenactors that participated in the First Annual National Guard Heritage Muster on April 19, 2003. The event will be held annually to celebrate the founding of the United States National Guard which traces its roots to Salem, Massachusetts in 1637 when the East Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia first mustered on Salem Common. Over 1,000 active National Guard troops and veterans from Salem and the surrounding area participated. Several thousand spectators enjoyed the festivities.

Bonnie Hurd Smith was hired by the Peabody Essex Museum to plan and execute the first event. Subsequently, she has assisted the Massachusetts National Guard to continue the tradition of the event.

The event included:

Memorial Service at Armory Park including speeches by Mass. Army National Guard, Peabody Essex Museum, and Second Corps Cadets dignitaries, lowering of flags to half mast, roll call of those killed answering the Lexington Alarm, wreath laying, rifle salute, taps, singing of "God Bless America," troops march to Salem Common
Muster on Salem Common including formation of troops, howitzer salute, review of troops by reviewing party, honors to the nation, speeches by the city and state dignitaries and by the Adjutant General of Massachusetts, a final pass in review of the troops

Tasks:

• assisted with logistical details, working with the Peabody Essex Museum, City of Salem, and Salem Parks & Recreation
