with an introduction by Bonnie Hurd Smith

These twenty-seven essays appeared from 1792-4 in the Massachusetts Magazine under the pen name "Constantia." They include a courageous essay written years earlier in 1775, during the Revolutionary War, in favor of a peaceful resolution with Britain and against mob violence toward Loyalists to the crown. Other essays investigate death, friendship, courage, compassion, motherhood, nature, and spirituality. The book's introduction contains images from the essay series and from Judith Sargent Murray's life.
